An American-built Tesla Roadster as part of the Global Green Challenge an electric sports car owned by Simon Hackett (the managing director of Australia’s national broadband company Internode) along with co-driver Emilis Prelgauskas set the world record distance for electric cars between charges by 71km to 501km (313 miles). This record breaking distance for an EV should go a long way toward dispelling range anxiety associated with all electric cars.

An American built EV breaks single charge travel distance world record in Australia

“Apparently the team broke the record by rarely traveling at speeds in excess of 35 mph, which further highlights the need for standardized testing when it comes to trying to compare electric and hybrid vehicles says Ken Burridge Editor-in-Chief of EV.com”.

The EV Range World Record breaking run was accomplished on the same course as the Global Green Challenge during this years World Solar Challenge (A solar-powered car race which covers 3021 km (1,877 miles) through the Australian outback, from Darwin to Adelaide) the winning vehicle was the Japanese Tokai Challenger, which averaged 62 MPH (99.4 km/h). Mr Burridge also mentioned that “An important rule in that race is that if the weight of a driver (including clothes) is less than 80 kg (180 lb), ballast must be added to make up the difference. That’s just the kind of standardization that the US EPA needs to enforce for EV and hybrid car testing.”

The Tesla Roadster can reach 125 MPH and runs on a battery pack made up of 6,831 individual lithium lithium-ion batteries, and is the first production EV to have more than 200 miles of range.
